GENERAL INTRODUCTION (Department of Mechatronics)

 DEPARTMENT OF MECHATRONICS

The Department of Mechatronics is one of four department within the School of Mechanical Engineering at Hanoi University of Science and Technology. Established on November 18, 2021, by Decision No. 2598/QD-DHBK-TCCB, the department comprises seven specialized groups: Intelligent Mechatronics, Robotics, Automated Production Systems, Automated Equipment, Applied Mechanics, Mechanical System Design, and Innovative Design. The total number of permanent staff is 57 (including 2 Professors, 16 Associate Professors, 31 Doctors, and 8 Masters). The training scale includes approximately 2200 undergraduate students (annual enrollment target of 550 students), about 50 postgraduate students, and 10 doctoral candidates. In 2022, the Department's programs in Mechanical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, and Manufacturing were ranked 401-450 globally by the prestigious QS ranking organization. The programs operated by the Department include: an advanced Mechatronics program taught in English (in collaboration with the University of Adelaide, Australia), a Mechatronics program in collaboration with Nagaoka University (Japan), a LUH Mechatronics program in collaboration with Leibniz University Hannover (Germany), a talented Mechatronics program, and a mass Mechatronics program.

The training programs are designed using the CDIO approach, are constantly updated and improved, and are quality-assessed by AUN/QA (Southeast Asia) and ASIIN (Germany). Advanced teaching methods, combining online and traditional classroom instruction, are applied, providing students with technological experience and enhancing the quality of lectures.

Scientific research, technology transfer, and international cooperation have always been a priority for the Department of Mechatronics. Department members have led numerous Nafosted basic research projects, ministerial-level and national-level projects, and collaborative projects with businesses. Testing, consulting, and technology transfer activities have been carried out effectively and have made significant contributions to the overall success of the Department. Department members have published many articles in prestigious domestic and international journals listed in the Scopus/WoS database.

Industry Collaboration and Strategic Partnerships, The Department of Mechatronics places strong emphasis on developing partnerships with research institutes, enterprises, and corporations both domestically and internationally to enhance the quality of education, scientific research, and technology transfer. The Department has established and continues to strengthen collaborations with notable partners such as: National Research Institute of Mechanical Engineering (NARIME), LG Display, Samsung Display, Mitsubishi, Keyence, FPT Software, Automech, Unilever, Nestlé, Neweb, Weltech, Su Viet, Daiwa Plastic, along with many other industrial companies and corporations.

These collaborations include a wide range of activities:

  •  Joint research projects and technology transfer initiatives
Internship and industrial placement programs for students
Co-development and continuous updating of training programs aligned with industry needs
Sponsorship of scholarships, laboratory equipment, and research facilities
Organization of scientific conferences, technical seminars, and career orientation events

Through these partnerships, the Department strengthens the connection between academic training and industrial practice, equipping students with practical skills and enhancing their readiness for the global labor market.

The 2021-2026 term presents many opportunities and challenges in the context of Hanoi University of Science and Technology (HUST) taking solid steps towards comprehensive autonomy and is also a crucial term marking the transformation of the model and restructuring to establish a School within the University. The Department aims for stable and unified development; breakthroughs in training, research & innovation, and internationalization. To promote cutting-edge activities, seize every opportunity, and create the best conditions for individuals and units within the Department to develop together, becoming a reputable training institution, and gradually integrating into the regional and international arena.
