SEMINAR: INTELLECTUAL PROPERTY RIGHTS AND PROCEDURES FOR REGISTERING PATENTS AND UTILITY SOLUTIONS FOR SCIENTIFIC RESEARCH

    With the aim of enhancing awareness and capacity in exploiting intellectual property (IP) rights in scientific research and technological development, on January 16, 2026, the School of Mechanical Engineering organized a seminar entitled “Intellectual Property Rights and Procedures for Registering Patents and Utility Solutions for Scientific Research”. The seminar was delivered by PhD. Do Duc Nam, former Deputy Director of the Vietnam National Office of Intellectual Property, together with his colleagues.

     In the context of rapidly growing scientific research and innovation activities, the protection of intellectual assets related to research outcomes, technical solutions, and scientific–technological products has become increasingly important and urgent. However, in practice, many scientists still encounter difficulties in identifying protectable subject matter as well as in preparing patent and utility solution applications that fully meet legal requirements and standards.

     In 2026, with the objective of raising awareness and equipping faculty members, researchers and Students with fundamental knowledge of intellectual property, the School of Mechanical Engineering – Hanoi University of Science and Technology, in collaboration with the National Office of Intellectual Property, has developed a series of specialized academic seminars on intellectual property. This seminar series aims to support scientists in gaining a clearer understanding of intellectual property rights, relevant legal regulations, and effective methods for protecting and exploiting scientific research outcomes.

   The seminar was attended by the leadership of the School of Mechanical Engineering, invited experts and speakers, lecturers, research staff, postgraduate students, and undergraduates interested in intellectual property registration. The seminar aimed to provide foundational and in-depth knowledge of intellectual property rights, particularly patents and utility solutions; update participants on current legal regulations and patent protection procedures; analyze patent evaluation criteria such as novelty, inventive step, and industrial applicability; and create a forum for discussion and exchange on practical experiences, challenges, and opportunities in registering and exploiting intellectual assets derived from scientific research.

   In his opening speech, Prof. PhD. Pham Van Sang emphasized the importance of intellectual property in the 2025–2030 period in accordance with Resolution No. 57-NQ/TW of the Politburo on breakthroughs in the development of science, technology, innovation, and national digital transformation. He noted that the revised draft of the Regulations on Personnel Affairs of Hanoi University of Science and Technology has identified intellectual property as a key task in the University’s scientific and technological development strategy. The ultimate goal is to promote more effective industrial application of intellectual assets, particularly patented inventions granted to staff members of the School of Mechanical Engineering. He also expressed his sincere appreciation to PhD. Do Duc Nam and his colleagues for sharing valuable insights and practical guidance on intellectual property and patent application techniques with the faculty members of the School.
