The School of Mechanical Engineering, Hanoi University of Science and Technology currently has 4 faculties with 06 majors and 13 training programs. The 6 majors include: Mechanical Engineering, Mechatronic Engineering, Dynamic Mechanical Engineering, Automotive Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and Thermal Engineering. In which, the Department of Mechanical Engineering recruited and trained 2 programs; Department of Mechatronics has 5 Training programs; Department of Automotive Engineering has 5 training programs and department of Thermal Energy has 1 training program. With a team of experienced scientists including nearly 300 lecturers and employees, the professional structure of the school with 4 faculties (24 professional groups) and 03 centers. The School of Mechanical Engineering has the capacity to meet all training needs, from bachelor of technology, bachelor of engineering, engineer, master and doctorate.

With the establishment of Hanoi University of Technology, the Faculty of Mechanical – Electrical was established in 1956. Since 1960, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering has been in the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering – Metallurgy. In August 1966, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering – Metallurgy was divided into 3 faculties: Manufacturing Technology, Dynamics, and Metallurgy. In 1986, according to the two-level management mechanism, the Faculty of Manufacturing Technology was divided into specialized faculties. By November 1995, the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering was re-established from specialized faculties on a three-block basis: Mechanical Technology, Engineering Mechanics, and Dynamic Mechanics. In 2000, the industry of Refrigeration and thermal equipment split into the Institute of Heat and Refrigeration Science and Technology. At the end of August 2006, the mechanical engineering industry was split into the School of Kinetic Engineering. In the middle of 2009, the School of Mechanical Engineering was established on the basis of the Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Following the “One HUST” philosophy, the process of reforming the organizational structure and build an advanced management model, thus motivating innovation and development, by October 2021, the School of Heat Engineering and Refrigeration, the School of Transportation Engineering and School of Mechanical Engineering are merged, and the new version of School of Mechanical Engineering has been established.

With the goal of training and providing highly qualified technical human resources to society, the School of Mechanical Engineering has fundamentally and comprehensively innovated according to international standards with a diversified, integrated, and interconnected training program. The philosophy was decided based on HUST’s mission and the consultation with all staff members and receiving a high consensus. SME’s educational philosophy, which is “Education must embrace production, theory must be associated with the practice, learning must incorporate experiments and the school must keep pace with social development”. The training goes hand in hand with scientific research and technology transfer with facilities and equipment that have been gradually upgraded, contributing to improving students’ qualifications and skills upon graduation.

Currently, the School of Mechanical Engineering is allowed by Hanoi University of Science and Technology to be autonomous in managing and building training programs, organizing training, researching science, and transferring technology. With the innovative and constantly improving organizational and management mechanism along with international cooperation for student exchange, the expanded School has facilitated the addition and development of a contingent of professional staff, management staff, meeting the increasing requirements of training, scientific research & technology transfer in the new stage, thereby contributing to the renovation and modernization of the country.
